Delinquent Tax Timeline

Each year the citizens of Madison County pay their annual property tax to the county. In the event an individual fails to pay by the deadline, April 16th, the property tax bill will be transferred to the Madison County Clerk's Office.


Tax Bill Process

October: The Madison County Sheriff mails the tax bill postcards

October-April 15: The Madison County Sheriff collects all property tax bills

April 16th: The delinquent tax bills are transferred to the Madison County Clerk's Office for collection.

The Madison County Attorney's Office will attempt to notify the property owner of their delinquency. If the tax bill is not paid in full by the date of the tax sale, the tax bill  (not the actual property) will go up for sale and may be purchased by a third party purchaser.


Tax Sale

The tax sale date for the 2016 delinquent tax bills is Thursday, August 24, 2017, at 9:00 am in the Madison County, Fiscal Court Room.


Third Party Purchasers

All third party purchasers, purchasing one or more bills are required to submit their registration form for tax sale with the Madison County Clerk's Office. Any third party purchasers wishing to purchase three or more bills are also required to register with the Commonwealth of Kentucky's Revenue Cabinet.


The County Clerk’s Office is responsible for collecting delinquent property tax bills.


For Payoff Information:

Please have the following information ready for payoff amount when you call our office at (859) 624-4703 Ext. 2:

  • Bill Number and Year
  • Parcel Number or MAP ID number
  • Address of Property
  • Name of Property Owner

Methods of payment: 

    • Cash
    • Cashier’s check
    • Certified check
    • Money order
    • Debit Card ($2.50 processing fee will be added to the total.)
    • Credit Card ($2.50 up to 3% processing fee will be added to the total.) If paying over the phone, only a credit card may be used and a processing fee of 3% will be added to the total.

The current year taxes are collected at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. For more information about the current tax bill or for the amount paid in the Sheriff Office, please call the Madison County Sheriff at (859)-624-4715 or visit their website at .

The Clerk's office cannot accept partial payments on delinquent tax bills.  If you are unable to make in payment in full you may call the Madison County Attorney’s Office to make payment arrangements. Their phone number is (859)-624-4777 ext. 9.


Tax Sale

Each year the County Clerk’s Office is responsible for conducting a delinquent tax sale. During the tax sale, the delinquent tax bills are eligible to be purchased by a third party. On April 16th, the Madison County Sheriff will turn over the unpaid tax bills to the Madison County Clerk’s Office. The tax sale may occur no earlier than 90 days and no later than 135 days after the bills have been turned over to the County Clerk’s Office. The actual date of the sale will be determined and posted on the Revenue Department website The delinquent bills must be advertised no more than 45 days and no less than 30 days before the tax sale.

The Madison County Clerk's Office will post a list of delinquent tax bills 45 days prior to the Tax Sale. This list will be updated weekly. As a courtesy, a list of unpaid bills will be provided on the day of the sale. Any tax bill paid the morning of the tax sale will be announced prior to the start of the sale.

All departments accept Cash, Check, Debit and Credit Cards.
Debit: $2.50 processing fee,  Credit Card: 3.0% processing fee.
