Become an Election Officer

If you are interested in becoming an Election Officer, you must fill out the Election Officer Application Form online before each election and select a date for your training class. If you don't have access to a computer, you may stop by the Richmond Office location and fill one out in person. Please review the job description and requirements before you apply.

This is a paid position. Election Day: $250. Early Voting: $16/hour.

Job Description

This is a paid position. Election Day: $250. Early Voting: $16/hour.

​

  • Arrive at your assigned location by 5:15 am so that you are able to open the polls at 6:00 am​

  • Be familiar with the election laws governing election day in the polling place​

  • Monitor machines, compare the number of votes cast with the beginning tally, and fill out paperwork accordingly. â€‹

  • Ensure that only qualified voters enter the voting machine to cast their ballot.​

  • Ensure that the election is conducted in the fairest and most honest manner possible.​

  • Throughout the day, check the voting booth for electioneering materials (flyers/hats/pens). â€‹

  • Enforce election laws and maintain law and order at the polls within 300 feet of the entrance to the polling location. â€‹

  • Sign paperwork and post results at the polling place. â€‹

  • Call your County Board of Elections or County Clerk if a voting machine malfunctions. â€‹

  • Be courteous and helpful to voters.​

  • Clean up your voting area before leaving the location.

YOU MUST ATTEND A 2-3-HOUR LONG TRAINING CLASS BEFORE EACH ELECTION TO SERVE AS AN ELECTION OFFICER.

Job Requirements

  • An Election Officer or alternate must be a qualified voter in the county in which he/she serves.​

  • An Election Officer cannot have changed their party affiliation for one year prior to appointment, KRS 117.45 (9).​

  • An Election Officer must be able to read and write in English. â€‹

  • An Election Officer must attend training sessions required by the Madison County Board of Elections before each Primary, General, or Special Election. â€‹

  • An Election Officer cannot be a candidate for office during the election.​

  • An Election Officer cannot be the spouse, parent, brother, sister, or child of a candidate who is to be voted for on Election Day. â€‹

  • An Election Officer must be able to work from 5:15 am to 6:00 pm, or until the polls close. They must also be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 25 pounds​

  • An Election Officer must have transportation to the training class and to their assigned polling location on Election Day.​

REGISTERED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE 17 MAY SERVE IN THE PRIMARY ELECTION IF THEY WILL BE 18 ON OR BEFORE THE DATE OF THE GENERAL ELECTION.
